FYI, I already got nasty emails from fans of Matt Hamill after I slammed him on my entry recently! About 50 of them. Of course, I deleted 'em.

Moi, you urged us to reach out to him -- that is fine. But one tad problem, as Deaf GAY man, I have no desire to reach out to Matt after what he did to gay people in general! How to find a solution in this manner?

It is lukewarm and vague.

I'm would like to see the role being played by a deaf actor and I support this even though I respect Matt's right to chose how he wants his story told.

Let's see how it all unfolds...

I feel the same, mixed.

From my perspective growing up Deaf, I saw one repetitive pattern: Some hearing people (some, not ALL) typically befriended Deaf people for their own self-interest motivation. At the end, they took assignments, projects, positions, roles, jobs and even awards which were supposed to go to Deaf people. It's not just in film industries, but also in many different situations. Now, with the Hamill movie, I thought, AGAIN?

However, I listened from different sides that left me mixed. For example, Hamill's background, who started the project, etc. More importantly, since the role of Hamill is his decision, I like to respect that. If I made a decision about ME, MY LIFE, MY "whatever", I would like people to respect that.

Yes, Hamill's decision caused the controversy. Yes, I saw unnecessary flaming comments from both sides. Somehow, I feel the attacks coming from those who are anti-Deaf, anti-ASL and anti-Deafhood are most personal and degrading. That trouble me. We are blamed for the controversy (even though I am mixed), but they are no better themselves.

I have no way of knowing whether they got any hate emails. I was focusing on how people are discussing the topic in DeafBlogLand. Some people are discussing the issue, while others are saying he's an idiot, a traitor, and that kind of thing. I'm saying that we need to elevate the discourse and stick to the issue. Hi- FABULOUS analysis- the standard-bearer, for sure. I agree with everything you said except for the next-to-last-paragraph. I'm not sure they actually got a high amount of DIRECT "hate" e-mails? Sure, there is a heated discussion going on, and maybe a few sent improper messages to Matt & Eben, but I don't want that to become the focus. The focus should, as always, remain on Matt's decision.

Mike Hamill need to re-evaluate his decision otherwise he will lose his fans and sponsors. There are many deaf actors that will do 20x better than what he has now. Many movies in the past when hearing has been using deaf role has failed to produce profitability. Why would Mike want to repeat the same mistake? Honestly, he's under the influenced with his manager and it's people. He need to listen to himself that quality over quantity is the answer for the long run.
If Mike continues to go that route, I will denounce my fan support with his future sporting events and his sponsors.
